Reference guideA Guide to Men’s Vitality Supplements: How to Read the Label
A men’s vitality supplement is a dietary supplement sold to support energy, drive and male wellbeing, usually built from tongkat ali, saw palmetto, horny goat weed, nettle and boron. The label is the only document that says what is inside: read the serving, the amount on each row, any extract ratio, the plant part and the caution before the marketing.
This guide takes each of those in turn, then the research and the one interaction to know.
What a men’s vitality supplement is, and what it is not
Three facts decide how to read everything else on the bottle.
A supplement, not a drug
It is sold as a dietary supplement, so it may claim to support a normal function of the body. It may not claim to treat erectile dysfunction, low testosterone or any prostate condition.
Claims with a disclaimer
Lines such as “Supports Male Vitality” are structure-and-function statements, and every one travels with the FDA’s standard disclaimer.
No approval before sale
The FDA does not approve supplements for safety or effectiveness before they are sold (FDA). The maker is responsible for both.
The FDA lists products sold for sexual enhancement and energy that were found to contain hidden prescription drug ingredients. A label promising prescription-strength results is the first to walk away from.
Reading a Supplement Facts panel, line by line
Six lines, read in order. The AlphaSteel panel below is the worked example.
- 1
Serving size
The amount every figure refers to. Where it is two capsules, one capsule carries half of each amount.
- 2
Servings per container
Divide the capsule count by the serving to get the days a bottle lasts. Sixty capsules at two a day is thirty days.
- 3
Amount per serving
The milligrams of each ingredient. A proprietary blend prints one total for several ingredients, which hides how much of each is inside.
- 4
% Daily Value
Botanicals have no Daily Value, so the column carries a dagger and a footnote. That is normal, not a warning.
- 5
Plant part and ratio
Good panels name the part (root, leaf, berry) and any extract ratio, because the research is specific to both.
- 6
Other ingredients
The capsule shell and fillers. This is where gelatin, cellulose and flow agents are listed.
| As printed on the panel | Amount per serving | % Daily Value |
|---|---|---|
| Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens) Berry Extract | 20 mg | Not established |
| Wild Yam (Dioscorea villosa) Root Extract | 20 mg | Not established |
| Sarsaparilla (Smilax glabra) Root Extract | 20 mg | Not established |
| Nettle (Urtica dioica) Leaf Extract | 20 mg | Not established |
| Boron Amino Acid Chelate | 20 mg | Not established |
| Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma Longifolia) From 100:1 extract, equivalent to approximately 1000mg of dry Tongkat Ali powder | 10 mg | Not established |
| Horny Goat Weed (Epimedium sagittatum) From 10:1 extract, equivalent to approximately 80mg of dry Horny Goat Weed powder | 8 mg | Not established |
Other ingredients: Microcrystalline Cellulose, Gelatin, Magnesium Stearate.
Extract ratios and dry-herb equivalents
The line on the label most often read the wrong way.
A ratio of 100:1 means roughly one hundred parts of dried root went into each part of finished extract. So when a label prints 10 mg of a 100:1 extract “equivalent to approximately 1000mg of dry” root, the 1,000 mg is that multiplication: it describes the root that went in, not the extract that came out.
A ratio cannot tell you which compounds survived the extraction. Two extracts with the same ratio can differ a great deal, so compare milligrams of extract with milligrams of extract.
A longer post works through the tongkat ali line, ratio and all.
Chelates, plant parts and capsule shells
Three details that change what a line on the panel means.
A chelate’s weight
“Boron Amino Acid Chelate 20 mg” on the AlphaSteel panel is the weight of the chelate, boron bound to an amino acid, not of the boron inside it. Research and the adult upper limit of 20 mg a day are stated as elemental boron (NIH ODS).
The plant part
The AlphaSteel panel prints nettle LEAF extract. Most of the prostate research on nettle is on the ROOT (Chrubasik 2007), so the two are best read as different ingredients.
The capsule shell
The other-ingredients line decides whether a capsule is vegetarian. The AlphaSteel panel lists gelatin, an animal product, even though a Vegetarian roundel appears in the brand’s artwork. The label wins.
Seven ingredients you will meet on most men’s vitality labels
What each one is, and what the research actually covers, in two or three lines.
Tongkat ali
Eurycoma longifolia root. A 2022 meta-analysis found higher total testosterone in men taking its extracts (Leisegang 2022). Two of the trials behind it (Ismail 2012, Chinnappan 2021) tested one branded water extract, with authors from the company that makes it.
Saw palmetto
The palm berry with the largest record. In men with an enlarged prostate it probably makes little or no difference to urinary symptoms on its own (Cochrane 2023), and its side effects are mild and infrequent (Agbabiaka 2009).
Horny goat weed
Epimedium, known for icariin. A long traditional record (Ma 2011) and a laboratory PDE5 finding, which is why it matters for anyone on certain medicines.
Nettle
Stinging nettle, sold as a root or a leaf extract. A label that names the part lets you match it to the right research (Chrubasik 2007 reviews the root).
Boron
A trace mineral. A week of daily boron changed steroid hormone levels in eight healthy men (Naghii 2011), a small and short study.
Wild yam
Dioscorea villosa root, carrying diosgenin. Its one controlled trial applied a cream to the skin of menopausal women and found little effect (Komesaroff 2001).
Label amounts against research amounts
One table, two columns, never merged.
| Ingredient | What studies used | What the AlphaSteel label prints |
|---|---|---|
| Tongkat ali | 100 to 400 mg a day of a standardised root water extract, for 5 to 12 weeks (Henkel 2014; Ismail 2012; Chinnappan 2021) | 10 mg of a 100:1 extract, which the label equates to about 1,000 mg of dry root |
| Horny goat weed | Single doses of 370, 740 and 1,110 mg of a standardised Epimedium extract in a safety and absorption study of 30 healthy men (Teo 2019) | 8 mg of a 10:1 extract, which the label equates to about 80 mg of dry herb |
| Saw palmetto | 320 mg a day of berry extract for a year (Bent 2006), and up to 960 mg a day for 72 weeks (Barry 2011), in men with urinary symptoms | 20 mg of berry extract |
| Nettle | The prostate research is on nettle ROOT (Chrubasik 2007); the one controlled trial of a freeze-dried nettle preparation found here ran for one week, in hay fever (Mittman 1990) | 20 mg of leaf extract |
| Wild yam | The one controlled trial found applied a wild yam cream to the skin for 3 months in menopausal women (Komesaroff 2001) | 20 mg of root extract, taken by mouth |
| Sarsaparilla | No controlled trial of the root extract in men was found; the reviews cover traditional use and laboratory work (Wu 2022) | 20 mg of root extract |
| Boron | 10 mg of elemental boron a day for one week in eight healthy men (Naghii 2011); the adult upper intake level is 20 mg of boron a day (NIH ODS) | 20 mg of boron amino acid chelate, the weight of the chelate rather than of the boron in it |
Research amounts are taken from the cited papers' abstracts. Two kinds of fact sit in two columns so they are never read as one.
Read across the rows and the pattern is plain: five of the seven actives on the AlphaSteel label are 20 mg each, and the published studies of those ingredients mostly used amounts in the hundreds of milligrams a day, often in a different population or a different form.
That does not make a low-dose formula useless, or a high-dose one effective. It does mean research on an ingredient cannot be carried over to a product at a fraction of the amount.
Interactions, hidden drugs and the questions to ask
Named once, with its sources.
Horny goat weed’s icariin inhibits the PDE5 enzyme in laboratory work, the same enzyme erectile-dysfunction prescriptions act on, and a published case report links horny goat weed to a fast heart rhythm. Anyone taking a PDE5 medicine, a nitrate, a blood-pressure medicine or a heart-rhythm medicine should raise this label with the prescriber before the first capsule.
The PDE5 finding is a laboratory enzyme study (Dell’Agli 2008), and the heart rhythm report is one published case (Partin 2004). Neither is a trial in people, and both are reasons to ask first.
- Bring the bottle, or a photograph of the panel, not the product name alone.
- Name every medicine you take, including ones taken only occasionally.
- Mention any heart-rhythm, blood-pressure or erectile-dysfunction treatment first.
- Read NCCIH’s advice on using supplements wisely if this is your first supplement.
How long to judge a men’s vitality supplement
The number a label cannot hide is how long the research ran.
- Weeks 1–2
Too early to judge
The trials in the dose table ran for weeks, not days.
- Weeks 5–12
Where the trials ran
The tongkat ali trials in the table ran five to twelve weeks. Shorter than that, a test of any formula in this category is incomplete.
- Weeks 4–8
What this desk’s buyers describe
Most AlphaSteel buyers writing to this desk describe a change at 4–8 weeks. It is a figure about those buyers, not a promise.
- Day 60
The guarantee closes
AlphaSteel’s guarantee is 60 days from purchase, and the seller asks for at least 30 days of continuous use first. Plan a pack around both.
Who writes this guide for the AlphaSteel desk
Four things a careful reader can check in ten minutes:
- The label is the source. The seven names, the milligram figures, the serving, the capsule count and the caution come from the printed AlphaSteel label and its Supplement Facts panel. Prices, shipping lines and the guarantee wording come from the seller’s own order page, read on 22 September 2026.
- Research amounts live in a column of their own, headed “What studies used”, beside a column that says what the label prints.
- Sources are cited against their own population. A trial in men with urinary symptoms, or a laboratory enzyme study, is described as exactly that.
- Corrections change the date. Write to contact@Alphasteeel.com and the review date moves forward.
